What would you do if this happened?

edited November 2011 in Faith Issues

You can't change your answers, but you can submit another answer. Oh, and by the way, you can only see the results after you vote, so.........I would vote.

Father Peter: What would you do if this happened. I really want you to answer this because your answers have always been knowledgable in God.

  • Can anyone write why they chose something in particular?
  • You skew the results by setting a limited set of answers.  There are other possibilities.
  • What do you mean....like write an option for other?
  • Either that, or give other options.  Maybe.
  • Okay, what would you do, ilovesaintmark? It seems like there are other options on your mind.
  • I would first observe as to the reasons why.

The sampling is not just from that moment at gym class, but in knowing the person over time.

Talk to them.  Let them share.

Once you have an understanding and have gained trust then you may discuss further.

A relationship with God is a very personal thing.  A relationship subtracting God's Presence is also a very personal thing.  Do not expect to crack through that  barrier in one discussion.  It is a long process.

Next, show them your Christianity.  Be consistent.  Do not show the snapshot of Christianity for one day, just the Sunday Christianity, but the Christianity of every day.  Fulfill the Beatitudes, fulfill the Commandments, fulfill the role of a good friend, and you will have answered this person.

Who knows, you may even help to open their heart again to God.

'Let your light so shine  before all men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father Who is in the Heavens.'

I'm sure if you flip through Fr. Peter's posts you will find many gems.  As you collect these gems, you will have a collection, and from the collection you will have realized the Treasure that is God.  Learn and you will be able to teach.  Teach and you will be able to affect.  Affect will lead to good effect.  Ultimately, goodness will not only be for your friend but for you also.

Be well and enjoy the Sunday Liturgy.
  • I like much ilovesaintmark's reply, also because there is the likely opportunity to meet again this person in the gym for example. Your belief should be the guide of your lifestyle and your speech.

Undoubtedly such situations of peaceful confrontation give you the opportunity to evangelize (which is a gift from God) or at least to defend your faith. We are required to know how to answer for the sake of Christ and to explain the Hope we have so that others can enjoy it too.

In cases that are not likely to meet often I'd add the approach like in the following video. It is a lecture related to this situation (discussions with humanists and atheists) made by active moderate Baptists. Of course they believe in salvation by faith alone, yet I understand that evangelizing is a very good deed and a mandatory responsibility, but this is off topic right now. Analyze their given approach. I think it is very useful.

PS: I like two options but I could only vote once.
