The Pope's Beatification

edited December 1969 in Random Issues
Hello all,

Did you all hear about the beatification of the late pope John Paul II.

Do you know what is that and how do we, as Orthodox, feel about it?

Thanks

  • Who the Roman Catholic church declares to be a saint has no standing whatsoever with us.

if he is a saint to the Roman Catholic's then good for him, either way it doesn't mean anything for us in the Orthodox Church.

Beatification, in the Roman Catholic Church is the third of four steps in the canonisation process. (Canonisation is the process of acknowledging that a person was a saint). A person who is beatified is given the title "Blessed." The next step is to be called "Saint."
  • He is beating mother Teresa by three weeks. Which is what the news said

I asked the coptic church here in Stockholm, Sweden and they said that Oriental orthodoxy and Catholicism are like brothers/sisters. They love each others very much and respect each other. So they do not say whether JP2 is a saint or not but they respect his beatification. That's all I know. I think a lot of Europeans who follow Oriental Orthodoxy love JP2 very much and listen to him because he talks about loving Christ.

third? I thought there were only two steps.  ??? ??? ???
  • In Rome, becoming a saint is a very detailed and lengthy process.

1.A local bishop investigates the candidate's life and writings for evidence of heroic virtue. The information uncovered by the bishop is sent to the Vatican.
2.A panel of theologians and the cardinals of the Congregation for Cause of Saints evaluate the candidate's life.
3.If the panel approves, the pope proclaims that the candidate is venerable, which means that the person is a role model of Catholic virtues.
4.The next step toward sainthood is beatification, which allows a person to be honored by a particular group or region. In order to beatify a candidate, it must be shown that the person is responsible for a posthumous miracle. Martyrs -- those who died for their religious cause -- can be beatified without evidence of a miracle. On Oct. 20, 2003, Mother Teresa was beatified. She is now known as Blessed Mother Teresa of Kolkata.
5.In order for the candidate to be considered a saint, there must be proof of a second posthumous miracle. If there is, the person is canonized.

    Very beaurocratic  :P
