Hey,

ok, so I'm thinking about going to graduate school. I want to study coptic history. As I understand it, you need to find a professor in a university that has a similar research interest to you, and then apply to that university. my problem is that I can't find too many coptic history historians. there's suppose to be a lot in England, but I just can't seem to find any. If anyone knows of any coptic historians, I need as many names as possible. thank youu.

  • Living or deceased?
  • Which period of Coptic Church history are you proposing to study?

I would not imagine that you need to find a Coptic history specialist so much as a Middle Eastern Church historian, since the relations of the various Sees are so intertwined.

If you can indicate the period you are interested in then it will be easier to point you towards some relevant scholars.

  • Depending on what history you are going to study I would be weary if I were you. When I study things like the Holy Fathers I just become more depressed that so many people have gone astray from their teachings. If its just the actual history of the Coptic Church itself, thats a very good and interesting subject. But I caution anyone studying the Holy Fathers.
  • I was hoping especially to look at the medieval ages and the church's relationship with the mamluks. the time period of the beginning of islamic rule and it's effect on the copts.
If I couldn't study that, then my second choice was looking at the development of the modern relationship.
  • Viv,
I am not sure that it would be possible to study one fragment of Coptic history like that. Just study all of it.
  • Ioannes, Viv is wanting to study for a higher degree so will have to focus on a very narrow area.

I would expect that there are many scholars who could provide oversight for such research and would not necessarily be Coptic specialists but rather specialists on the Mamluks and that period.

    This is an interesting book..

You might perhaps want to contact the author, Alastair Hamilton, and see if he can advise you.

  • Ahhh I see. I figured it would be difficult to study certain areas of Coptic History. My bad.
  • thankyou so much father Peter, I'll definitely take a look at that book, and that scholar. :)
  • how about this http://www.coptic.mq.edu.au/

I knew of this coptic college http://www.coptictheology.com/ but i think its more theology than history, nonetheless you still may be able to still study what you want there
